Audi A3 8Y — Wheel Fitment & Specs
Overview
The first generation Audi A3, introduced in June 1995 and launched for the European market in September 1996, marked Audi's return to small cars after a 19-year hiatus. Built on the Volkswagen Group A platform (PQ34), it was the first model to use this platform and closely resembled the Volkswagen Golf Mk4. Initially offered as a three-door hatchback with transversely mounted inline-four engines in front-wheel drive or quattro four-wheel drive configurations, the A3 later expanded its range with a five-door variant and new engine options including turbocharged petrol and diesel units. The model was updated in late 2000 with cosmetic changes and introduced six-speed manual gearboxes on higher-performance models. Despite being replaced by the second generation in Europe in 2003, production continued until 2006 in Brazil.

Aftermarket wheel sizes — read per position:
| Position | Width | Offset |
|---|---|---|
| Front | 6J–8.5J | ET12–ET45 |
As a rule, each extra 1J of width wants roughly +8–10 ET to keep the wheel tucked. The exact offset and any spacer are confirmed by the fit-check.
UK popularity & demand
Based on DfT VEH0124 vehicle-parc data (2025), there are approximately 449,880 Audi A3 on UK roads, placing it in the top 1% of car models by volume across our fitment database. That makes its wheel fitment a high-demand size to keep in stock — one reason we track its exact spec here.

History & notable variants
The first generation Audi A3 received a Euro NCAP rating of 4 out of 5 stars but was criticized for poor pedestrian protection and hazards in the knee impact area.
