Overview

The Audi A8 D3 is the third generation of the full-size luxury sedan, manufactured by Audi from 2002 to 2010. Built on the Volkswagen Group D3 platform and featuring an aluminum chassis, it succeeded the D2 model in late 2002. The D3 was longer than its predecessor, offering space for four or five large adult occupants depending on rear seat configuration. It introduced advanced features such as Audi's Multi Media Interface (MMI), adaptive air suspension with continuously controlled damping, and bi-xenon headlights with static Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS). Available in both short-wheelbase (A8) and long-wheelbase (A8 L) variants, the D3 was designed to compete with luxury sedans like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7 Series.

History & notable variants

The development of the A8 D3 began in 1996, with design work starting in Ingolstadt in 1997. The exterior and interior designs were refined over several years before being finalized for production in August 2002. Notable features included a fingerprint scanner for driver identification systems, which was introduced on the Audi Avantissimo concept car at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2001.
