Overview

The Audi R8 is a mid-engine, 2-seater sports car that uses Audi's trademark quattro permanent all-wheel drive system. Introduced by Audi AG in 2006 and manufactured exclusively by Audi Sport GmbH (formerly quattro GmbH) at the company’s 'aluminium site' in Neckarsulm, Germany. The first generation (Type 42) was based on the Audi Space Frame with an aluminium monocoque construction and featured V8 and V10 engine options. It received a facelift in 2012 and ended production in August 2015. The second generation (Type 4S), unveiled at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, is built on the Modular Sports System platform shared with the Lamborghini Huracán, offering V10 and e-Tron variants.

History & notable variants

The R8 was inspired by the Lamborghini Gallardo but uses a different platform for its second generation. It debuted at the 2003 International Geneva Motor Show as a concept car before being officially launched in September 2006. The first-generation models included coupé and convertible (Spyder) variants, with high-performance GT and Motorsport versions introduced later. An all-electric version was planned but only reached production for the second generation model. In 2017, Audi released a limited edition V10 Plus 'Exclusive Edition' in the US featuring laser headlights.
