Overview
The first generation of the BMW 1 Series includes the E81 (3-door hatchback), E82 (coupe), E87 (5-door hatchback), and E88 (convertible). Produced from 2004 to 2013, it replaced the 3 Series Compact as BMW's entry-level model. The car features a rear-wheel drive layout with a longitudinally-mounted engine providing a rare 50:50 weight distribution for its class. Engines range from four-cylinder turbo-diesel and naturally aspirated petrol units to six-cylinder naturally aspirated and turbocharged engines, the latter exclusive to coupes and convertibles.

History & notable variants
Development of the E8x generation began alongside the E90 3 Series, sharing approximately 60% components. The first models were unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in September 2004 as a five-door hatchback (E87). In May 2005, Kermit the Frog starred in a commercial showcasing the car's agility. A facelift was introduced in 2007 for the E87 and later for the coupes and convertibles in 2010.
