Overview

The BMW 2 Series is a range of subcompact executive cars (C-segment) manufactured by BMW since 2014. It was created when the company spun off the two-door models from the BMW 1 Series into a separate series. The first generation included coupé and convertible variants, both rear-wheel drive, produced in Leipzig alongside the F20 1 Series hatchback range using the same platform. A year later, front-wheel-drive-based Active Tourer (compact MPV) and Gran Tourer (7-seat version) were introduced on a different platform. In 2019, the four-door sedan variant, Gran Coupé, was added to the lineup. The second generation of coupé models debuted in July 2021 as rear-wheel drive vehicles built on the CLAR platform.

History & notable variants

The first generation (F22/F23) started production in November 2013 and included various trim levels such as 220, 228, 230, and M235i. The top performance model was the F87 M2 with turbocharged inline-six engines. In July 2021, BMW introduced the second generation (G42) coupé, which is built on the CLAR platform and exclusively produced in Mexico. Notable variants include the high-performance M235i and M2 models.
