Overview

The fifth generation of the BMW 5 Series, known as the E60 (saloon) and E61 (Touring), was produced from July 5, 2003 to 2010. It introduced several new electronic features such as iDrive infotainment system, head-up display, active cruise control, adaptive headlights, night vision, lane departure warning, and voice control. The generation marked the first BMW 5 Series with a turbocharged petrol engine, a 6-speed automatic transmission, and regenerative braking. It was assembled in Germany, China, Mexico, India, Russia, Thailand, Indonesia, and Egypt.

History & notable variants

Development began in 1997 and concluded in 2002 under the leadership of Boyke Boyer and final design by Davide Arcangeli under Chris Bangle. The saloon was launched on July 5, 2003 in Europe and October 2003 in North America; Touring models were introduced late in 2004. In January 2010, the F10 generation succeeded it.
