Overview

The BMW M5 is a high-performance version of the BMW 5 Series automobile developed by BMW's motorsport division, BMW M GmbH. It has been continuously produced since 1984 in saloon body style and occasionally as an estate model in some markets. The first generation (E28) was manufactured from October 1984 to June 1988, based on the E28 5 Series chassis with a modified M88/3 engine that made it the fastest production saloon at launch. Production resumed for the second generation (E34) in September 1988 and continued until August 1995, featuring an upgraded S38 straight-six engine.

History & notable variants

The E28 M5 was introduced at the Amsterdam Motor Show in February 1985 and featured a unique M88/3 engine. It faced production delays leading to a class action lawsuit by US owners who received compensation vouchers. The E34 generation saw cosmetic updates, performance enhancements with an upgraded S38B38 engine, and special editions like the Cecotto and Winkelhock models. Production of the E39 M5 began in October 1998 following a three-year gap.
