Overview
The BMW M5 is a high-performance version of the BMW 5 Series automobile developed by BMW's motorsport division, BMW M GmbH. It has been continuously produced since 1984 in saloon body style and occasionally as an estate model in some markets. The first generation (E28) was hand-built on the E28 535i chassis with a modified engine from the M1 sports car, making it the fastest production saloon at its launch. Production has been periodic, with gaps between generations.

History & notable variants
The E28 M5 was produced from October 1984 to June 1988 and made its debut at the Amsterdam Motor Show in February 1985. It featured a modified engine from the BMW M1 sports car and was available in Europe, Great Britain, the United States, Canada, and South Africa. The E34 generation followed from September 1988 to August 1995 with notable upgrades including an upgraded engine and special editions like the Cecotto and Winkelhock models.
