Overview

The BMW Z4 II (E89) is the second generation of the BMW Z4 range of two-door roadsters, produced from February 2009 to August 2016 in Regensburg, Germany. It was the first Z Series model to use a retractable hardtop roof, eliminating separate roadster and coupé versions. The E89 replaced the E85/E86 Z4 and is built on the BMW L2 platform. This generation saw significant design changes with female designers Juliane Blasi (exterior) and Nadya Arnaout (interior). It was succeeded by the G29 model in 2018.

History & notable variants

The E89 was officially announced on December 13, 2008, unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit alongside the MINI Convertible. Production began in February 2009 and ended in August 2016. A total of €130 million was spent from 2007 to 2009 on expanding the Regensburg plant for production, making it the third Z series car manufactured in Germany since the Z1 and Z8. Notable awards include the International Design Excellence Award (IDEA) and Eyes on Design Award for best production vehicle.
