Overview

The second-generation Ford Mondeo was introduced in October 2000, succeeding the first generation. It was significantly larger than its predecessor and used the CDW27 platform while retaining the basic chassis and suspension design from the previous model. The car featured a more sober 'Germanic' interior design compared to the rounded American style of earlier models. Available body styles included saloon, liftback, and estate variants. This generation was not sold in Australia due to market decline but replaced the Ford Contour in Mexico until 2007.

The second-generation Mondeo underwent a mid-cycle facelift in October 1996, which involved extensive redesigns of its exterior and interior, marking it as the Mondeo Mk II. It was marketed alongside the North American Ford Fusion from 2005 onwards but did not enter the US market directly.
