Overview

The third generation Mercedes-Benz CL-Class (C216) was introduced in 2006, following a six-year development period. It continued the tradition of being a grand tourer with no B-pillar between front and rear side windows. Built on the chassis of the W221 S-Class but without V6 or hybrid engines available for this model, it offered four variants: CL 550 (CL 500 in some markets), high-performance CL 63 AMG, ultra-luxury twin-turbo CL 600, and top-of-the-line CL 65 AMG. The C216 was heavier than its S-Class counterpart but featured advanced technologies such as Distronic Plus cruise control and Active NightVision.
