Overview

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG (C197 / R197) is a front mid-engine, 2-seater, limited production sports car developed by the Mercedes-AMG division of German automotive manufacturer Mercedes-Benz. It was designed to be a modern revival of the iconic 300SL Gullwing and succeeded the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren as its spiritual successor. The SLS AMG is notable for being the first Mercedes-Benz automobile entirely designed and built from scratch by AMG, featuring an M159 engine that was claimed to be the world's most powerful naturally aspirated production series engine at its introduction in 2009.

History & notable variants

The SLS AMG made its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2009 and went on sale in Europe mid-2010, with US sales starting in early 2011. It was assembled largely by hand, with its chassis and aluminum body shell produced by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria, before being transferred to Sindelfingen, Germany for final assembly. The car won several design awards including the red dot 'best of the best' award and Auto Bild's Design Award as Europe’s most attractive car. An electric version, the SLS AMG Electric Drive, was introduced at the 2012 Paris Motor Show.
