The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, also known as the G-Wagon or G-Wagen (abbreviation of Geländewagen), is a luxury SUV with military origins. Developed in 1972 and first introduced to civilian markets in 1979, it has since evolved into one of Daimler's longest-running models. The W463 generation, produced from 1990 to 2018, marked a significant shift towards luxury with features like air conditioning, cruise control, and more refined interiors. Built on the body-on-frame platform, this generation featured three fully locking differentials, making it highly capable off-road. It was assembled in Graz, Austria by Magna Steyr.

History & notable variants

In 1989, Mercedes-Benz introduced a new model variant with permanent four-wheel drive and optional ABS at the Frankfurt International Motor Show to celebrate the G Model's tenth anniversary. The W463 generation saw major refinements including improved powertrains, better driving dynamics, and enhanced luxury features. Notable variants included the powerful G 500 and the high-performance G 55 AMG introduced in 1999. This generation was succeeded by a second-generation model in 2018.
