Overview
The Mercedes-Benz GLE, formerly known as the M-Class (designated with the 'ML' nomenclature), is a mid-size luxury SUV produced by Mercedes-Benz since 1997. The first generation of this model, designated W163, was a body-on-frame SUV and was manufactured from February 1997 to December 2004 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama (MBUSI) and Graz, Austria (Magna Steyr). It featured seating for five or seven with an optional third-row seat. The W163 M-Class introduced several innovations such as electronic stability control and front- and side-impact airbags with advanced occupant detection, earning high marks in crash tests.

History & notable variants
The first generation of the Mercedes-Benz GLE (W163) was launched on 19 February 1997 for the North American market. It received accolades such as Motor Trend's Truck of the Year and the North American International Auto Show's North American Truck of the Year in 1998, but faced criticism regarding quality issues early on. A facelift was introduced in 2001 to improve aesthetics and performance, leading to better reception.
