Overview

The Mercedes-Benz GLE, formerly known as the M-Class (W163), is a mid-size luxury SUV produced by Mercedes-Benz since 1997. The first generation W163 was a body-on-frame SUV and was manufactured until December 2004. It was built in Tuscaloosa, Alabama at the Mercedes-Benz U.S. International plant from February 1997 onwards, with Magna Steyr also building it in Graz, Austria for the European market between 1999 and 2002.

History & notable variants

The W163 was launched on 19 February 1997 in North America as the ML 320. It featured electronic stability control and front- and side-impact airbags, earning high marks in crash tests. The M-Class received a facelift for the 2002 model year with styling updates and new engine options.
