History & notable variants
Development of the first-generation M-Class began in 1992 after a joint agreement with Mitsubishi Motors was abandoned due to technical issues. The vehicle launched on February 19, 1997, for the North American market as the ML 320 and later expanded globally. It received a facelift in 2001 for the 2002 model year, improving quality and adding new features like the ML 500 with a 5.0-liter V8 engine and the ML 400 CDI diesel variant.
