Overview

The Mercedes-Benz M-Class (W163) is a first-generation mid-size luxury SUV produced by Mercedes-Benz from February 1997 to December 2004. It was the company's entry into the luxury SUV market, positioned between the smaller GLC and larger GLS models. The W163 series features a body-on-frame construction and was initially manufactured in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, with Magna Steyr building it for the European market from 1999 to 2002. This generation introduced several innovations including electronic stability control and front- and side-impact airbags, earning high marks in crash tests.

History & notable variants

The W163 was developed as a replacement for the G-Class and began production at Mercedes-Benz U.S. International (MBUSI) plant near Vance, Alabama, in February 1997. It launched with the ML 320 model featuring a 3.2-liter V6 engine. The M-Class received significant praise upon launch, winning Motor Trend's Truck of the Year and North American Truck of the Year awards for 1998. However, initial quality issues led to criticism, which improved over time following a facelift in 2001.
