Overview
The Mercedes-Benz GLE, formerly known as the M-Class (ML), is a mid-size luxury SUV produced by Mercedes-Benz since 1997. The first generation of this model, designated W163, was a body-on-frame SUV and was manufactured from February 1997 to December 2004 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, USA, with Magna Steyr also producing it for the European market between 1999 and 2002. This generation marked Mercedes-Benz's entry into the luxury SUV segment, offering a range of petrol and diesel engines paired with manual or automatic transmissions and permanent 4Matic four-wheel drive.

History & notable variants
The W163 was launched in February 1997 for the North American market as the ML 320. It received accolades such as Motor Trend's Truck of the Year for 1998, but faced criticism regarding initial quality issues which improved over time with a facelift introduced in 2001 for the 2002 model year. The W163 was also featured prominently in the film 'The Lost World: Jurassic Park' and received significant media attention.
