Overview

The Mercedes-Benz R230 SL is a grand touring sports car introduced in 2001, continuing the evolution of its predecessor, the R129. It features a 'Vario Roof' retractable hardtop and Active Body Control (ABC) active suspension system. The fifth-generation SL-Class underwent a significant facelift in 2008 with new engines and styling reminiscent of the classic 300 SL. Production units totalled 169,433, with the most common model being the SL500 (~100,000 units).

History & notable variants

The R230 was introduced in 2001 as a two-passenger convertible featuring a retractable hardtop and advanced technology such as Keyless Go keyless entry. In 2006, it received minor cosmetic updates and revised engine options. A major facelift in 2008 included new headlights with an optional 'Intelligent Light System' and a new front end design. High-performance variants like the SL 55 AMG and SL 63 AMG were introduced alongside the standard models.
