The Beetle was conceived in the early 1930s when Adolf Hitler decided there was a need for an inexpensive, simple, mass-produced 'people's car' to serve Germany's new road network. Ferdinand Porsche and his team began developing the car in the early 1930s but production did not commence until after World War II ended in 1945. The Beetle surpassed the Ford Model T in sales in 1972, holding this record for 25 years before declining due to changing consumer preferences towards front-wheel drive compact hatchbacks and competition from Japanese automakers.
