History & notable variants

The ID.3 was previewed as a concept car called the Volkswagen I.D., first shown at the 2016 Paris Motor Show, featuring innovations such as virtual wing mirrors and retractable LiDAR sensors for autonomous driving. In May 2019, Volkswagen confirmed the production model would be named ID.3 instead of the rumoured 'I.D. Neo' name. The car is assembled at Volkswagen's Zwickau factory and an additional line was started in Dresden in 2021. A facelift for 2023 included a redesigned front bumper, improved interior material quality, and enhanced driver assistance systems. In April 2026, Volkswagen presented the ID.3 Neo with significant updates including a revised exterior design, new interior, updated electric drive system, and expanded range of technologies.
