Overview

The Volkswagen Transporter (T4), marketed in North America as the Volkswagen EuroVan, is a van produced by the German manufacturer Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles between 1990 and 2004. It succeeded the Volkswagen Type 2 (T3) and was superseded by the Volkswagen Transporter (T5). The T4 marked a significant shift for Volkswagen with its front-mounted, water-cooled engine layout, which replaced the air-cooled rear-engine design of previous models. Available in various body styles including vans, pickups, campervans, and special vehicles like ambulances, the T4 was known for its versatility and adaptability to different markets and uses.

History & notable variants

Introduced in 1990, the T4 was a major departure from earlier Volkswagen vans with its front-engine layout. This change was prompted by the success of similar moves in passenger cars but delayed due to internal decisions favoring rear-engined designs. The T4 underwent a significant facelift in 1996 to accommodate the VR6 engine, leading to short and long-nose versions (T4a and T4b). Production ceased in 2003 after nearly 14 years of manufacturing.
